Weiss is a member of SGRV’s Employment Law & Litigation, Commercial Litigation, Professional Liability & Malpractice Litigation, and Insurance Coverage and Casualty Litigation practice groups. Mr. Weiss’s extensive civil litigation experience includes a wide range of insurance defense, including commercial, professional, and personal injury cases. His practice includes the defense of bad faith claims, architect and engineering claims, legal and medical malpractice claims, construction accident and premises liability claims, commercial and contractual claims, estate claims, subrogation claims, trucking and motor vehicle accident claims, and products liability claims. Mr. Weiss has also handled employment litigation cases for both plaintiff and defense.
Jonathan D. Weiss joined SGRV in 2025, after previously having been a shareholder at Darwin Baum, Marshall Dennehey, Warner Coleman and Goggin, where he was an insurance defense litigation attorney for twenty-six years. Jonathan has diverse legal practice involving both trial litigation and appellate work.
In addition to his legal career, Jonathan previously served as an elected Whitemarsh Township Supervisor, where he was also a liaison to the Zoning and Library Boards. He was also a founding member and Vice-President of the Whitemarsh Township Environmental Advisory Board.
Currently, in addition to practicing law for the firm, Jonathan is enrolled in Temple University’s English Ph.D. program. His study areas include 19th Century American Literature and Law and Literature.
- Jonathan defended a medical laboratory that performed drug testing for state licensure boards in a class action suit. Jonathan secured the dismissal of the suit on the grounds that the class action certification criteria had not been satisfied.
- Jonathan defended a school for sex offenders that was sued in a civil rights case for the alleged assault of a student. Jonathan wrote a successful summary judgment brief seeking the dismissal of the section 1983 claims on the grounds that the school was not a “state actor”. On appeal, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals issued an opinion, incorporating many of Jonathan’s arguments, affirming the dismissal of the section 1983 claims.
- Jonathan defended and ultimately helped secure the release of a supplier whose bid was rejected in a multi-party, multi-million dollar chemical gas explosion case, where the claims against his client included failure to warn during the bidding process.
- Jonathan defended a design-manufacturer in a multi-party, international AAA litigation involving the allegedly negligent design and construction of the world’s largest electric glass melter. The case involved first party contract claims (including change orders, delay damages, and lost profits), crossclaims and counterclaims, and underlying subrogation claims totaling over $30 million.
- Jonathan has defended and consulted with corporate medical clients (and their parents, subsidiaries, and affiliates) who have been sued on both direct and vicarious liability claims in medical malpractice cases. Jonathan has also defended clients in licensure actions brought by state professional Boards.
